Automation has been a major trend in the sector for over 20 years now. Automated cranes, enhanced robotics and smart machines are only some of the latest developments that are reshaping operational processes, and with intelligent terminal automation systems (TASs) and Boxbay Retrofit disrupting the market –among other tools–, we can predict that automation trends will continue to rise.
However, many ports and terminal operators are still debating on what the right level of automation is. The dichotomy between full and semi automation becomes more relevant as we consider recent events causing port congestion and supply chain disruption – how can automation prevent further disturbance?
While automation looks promising the industry is also questioning how to integrate it into already existing infrastructure, both physical and digital, and therefore, how ports and terminals are to rethink their operations afterwards. Furthermore, training staff accordingly is just as important to guarantee not only the success of automation integration but also their own safety and the company’s resilience.
