Digital will be central in the transformation of shipping and the somewhat fast-tracked advancement that was made in 2020 will now continue to expand at an exponential rate in the next decade.
New technologies such as 5G, Big Data, IoT, AI, cloud-based solutions, track & trace, radio frequency, geolocation tools, automated gates and electronic readers for container plaques, among others, will enable better connectivity, data exchange and storage, and interoperability. Terminals must embrace digitalisation now to remain competitive or they face jeopardising their long-term future.
While the benefits of becoming a digitalised smart port are large, there are significant barriers which delay this transformation, resulting in an uneven digital transformation across ports and terminals in the Americas.
At present, there is significant industry collaboration with many new digital platforms bringing together the supply chain and technology sectors in a joint effort to deliver truly game-changing initiatives. Yet, it is crucial to draw a roadmap that ensures an even and effective digital transformation across the region.
