The number of terminals adding automated and remote-controlled cranes continues to grow. The crane control technology is more mature and well accepted, but at the same time there are huge difference in how terminals approach the roll of the remote operator and the design of remote-control room itself. Some remote operators sit in full crane operator chairs, while others sit at a basic office desk. The work itself ranges from supervision of an automation system for a few seconds per crane cycle to full completion of some moves.

There are also differences in the safety zones on the terminal around remotely controlled cranes. In some cases remote controlled cranes can operate around road trucks with a driver in the cab, but in other applications this is not permitted.
This session will explore the different approaches to the role of the remote crane operator and the design of the work environment.
What are the differences in the scope of work for remote control operators?
How should terminals approach the balance between interventions that necessary from a crane control perspective, and creating an interesting and engaging remote operator roll?
When do remote operators need a full crane driver chair and console?
How many camera views and monitors are necessary for the remote control station and how should they be organised?
How long should work periods be for remote control operators?
Does the crane control and safety system need to eliminate all risk of a truck or a person on the ground being in the wrong place, or can the remote operator have some responsibility for checking operating zones are clear?
