In today’s new digital world, with ports becoming digital ecosystems, proper cyber security protocols are required to protect port communities from digital predators. As it occurs with every ecosystem, digital predators -or cyber-threats- will take advantage of any potential weakness of their prey to attack.
Although often considered just as an ‘IT issue’, cyber security resilience has crucial business and legal repercussions: According to the World Economic Forum, economic loss owing to cyber-crime is predicted to reach USD3 trillion in 2020, representing 3.4% of global GDP. It is therefore crucial for port communities to develop comprehensive crisis management protocols that enable them to react and defend themselves in time against any potential cyber-attack.
By ensuring effective cyber-responses, not only the port itself will be protected but also the broader maritime sector: Terminal operators, government authorities, shipping lines, and all the key stakeholders within the supply chain.
The new cyber security guidelines, recently launched by the IAPH and with the endorsement of the IMO, will provide a holistic, yet practical, approach to best practices in cyber security for the entire port & terminal sector.
