The need for digitalisation in the sector has been growing steadily over recent years. While the digital transformation in the industry is still at an early stage, pioneer ports and terminals are already capitalizing on its benefits. Early adopters of digital technology have experienced improvements in connectivity and real-time monitoring of their operations, including arrival of vessels to terminals, carbon emissions and secure information exchanges, all of which in turn leads to a growth of ports productivity.
Yet, there are significant gaps in terms of how far in the digitalisation process ports in Europe are. Present barriers include the significant investments required for the implementation of these novel technologies, as well as rethinking the way port operate to adapt and integrate them into their activities. Also, the industry does need to address the human factor in its acceleration if digitalisation and how ‘trust’ and ‘collaboration’, as well as technology, are required to truly benefit from a true digital operation.
