The Americas’ strategic position between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans has provided the continent with major opportunities to create transport hubs for trade. Although North America’s larger economy has contributed to the development of larger ports, Latin America’s growing markets, mainly comprised of commodity and food exports, as well as its territorial extension, makes the region an ideal location for new trade hubs.
Adapting to mega-ship deployment, big vessel cascading, and shipping industry consolidation has been extremely challenging for port and terminal operators in recent years. This challenge is increased by acute concerns raised over an uneven distribution of benefits by which economies of scale in shipping create diseconomies in ports and the onward land transport chain. Port and connecting landside infrastructure development is vital to trade and nations, but both private and public investments are acutely impacted by shipping industry developments.
Significant variables to be added into the equation are climate change and global warming. While modernizing and diversifying port and inland logistics infrastructure is key to optimize supply chains across the region, it is crucial to do so following an eco-friendly approach.
