Stay up to date with the latest innovations in the market
Alongside its Container Supply Chain (CSC) programme, TOC Asia will be featuring its TECH TOC conference, for industry stakeholders to stay up to date with the latest advances in terminal operations, equipment, and technology. This conference track is keeping with our 40-year history, placing the spotlight on the container terminal and port at the heart of the maritime supply chain.
Coming out of this pandemic, the sector finds its need for embracing digitalisation and sustainability heightened. Recent events like the COP26 and the latest report on climate change released by the IPCC emphasize the need to reduce carbon emissions – this poses a significant challenge for the industry (which releases 940 million tonnes of CO2 yearly, equivalent to 2.5% of the global carbon footprint). Yet in challenging times innovation thrives, now more than ever are we seeing new green technology coming into the market, with a particular focus on alternative fuels and electrification. As new clean technology helps navigate through the green transition the sector must now integrate it into operational processes and business models to bring forward the concept of ‘green profit’.
Innovation goes beyond sustainability; the pandemic forced many to work remotely, which was only possible through real-time connectivity and data sharing. Now that we seem -and hope- to be moving away from Covid-19, the sector faces the opportunity to capitalize on novel digital tools to optimize processes, increase efficiency, maximize profit, and become more resilient. Whether feared or embraced, new technologies such as AI, 5G, IoT, IoL, Digital Twins, Blockchain, FinTech, cloud-based systems, Big Data, autonomous shipping vessels and vehicles, weather apps, vehicle booking systems, geolocation tools, automated gates, electronic readers for container plaques, etc., are building the foundations to bring the maritime & logistics sector to the next level.
Further to the digital transformation, ports & terminal operators are looking to transform their operations by embracing automation. Yet, the debate on whether they should aim at becoming semi or fully automated continues: What’s the right answer? Will it remain the same in the long-term? How will automation increase safety in the yard, and how does it relate to equipment maintenance? Will it help to reduce carbon emissions? While automation is key for transforming port operations, its integration is crucial.
TOC Asia will be bringing stakeholders from across the supply chain to discuss, debate, exchange experiences and learn; its TECH TOC programme will be featuring the latest innovations in the sector, placing the debate on how these can help to navigate through energy transition, reduction of carbon emissions, digitalisation, automation, and overall, bring the industry forward.
