Container Supply Chain Programme Tuesday 29th November / 16:00 - 17:30 SGT
As traffic across the Asia-Americas and Asia-Europe trade routes experience continuous increasing demand, and supply chains evolve, the modernization and expansion of port & logistics infrastructure will be pivotal to guarantee the region’s competitiveness and resilience.
The ports and maritime sector comprised 20% of the total infrastructure investment in the region in 2019, however, in 2021 and after the pandemic paralyzed aviation, it now comprises 40%.The drivers behind this 100% increase seem to be growth in trade, resilience against potential disruption in the supply chain and sustainability to mitigate climate change.
Although the need for infrastructure expansion and modernisation in the region is pressing, funding poses a significant challenge. Multilateral development banks (MDBs) to capitalize on port infrastructure projects in emerging markets across Asia.Additionally, governments are also looking at private-public partnerships (PPPs) and attracting foreign investment to fund these projects.A significant amount of this is coming from China’s BRI and Japan, however, with the G7’s recently announced B3W initiative, the political scenario seems to be playing a larger role in the race towards infrastructure expansion and modernization.
Growth, resilience & sustainability: How are these factors driving the infrastructure evolution in the maritime & logistics sector?
What are current and potential funding schemes for port infrastructure greenfield projects? How are PPPs fostering port modernization in South East Asia & surrounding emerging markets?
