Foreword from James Moore, Editor, IFSEC Global
FIREX returned to London’s ExCeL for the first time in three years in May 2022. And it returned in style.
Alongside its co-located shows, IFSEC International, Safety & Health Expo, Facilities Show and Intelligent Building Europe, the event welcomed thousands of fire and building safety professionals to reconnect, learn and engage with the latest innovations and debates in the sector.
Put together by the IFSEC Global editorial team, this eBook provides an exclusive overview of several key debates and presentations that took place on the FIREX Expertise & Guidance Theatre stage, as well as insight into the discussion points at this year’s Tall Buildings Conference, which runs alongside the event each year.
The fire industry has been through a tumultuous period in the UK since the tragic events of Wednesday 14 June 2017, where 72 people died in the Grenfell Tower fire. The resulting investigations, findings and inquiry have been the catalyst for major legislative changes, which only this year are beginning to come into effect.
After such a long time since the last FIREX, the 2022 event provided an unmissable opportunity for industry professionals to come back together and discuss the state of the industry, as well as look forward to what’s ahead.
Kicking off with a powerful opening presentation from Gill Kernick, author of 'Catastrophe and Systemic Change' and a Grenfell resident between 2011-2014, on safety as a driver for change in the wider built environment sector, the session set the tone for an enlightening three days of content. The week finished on a panel debate with representatives from the major fire industry associations and membership bodies as they examined what was ahead for the sector.
This eBook provides an exclusive overview of several key debates and presentations that took place on the FIREX Expertise & Guidance Theatre stage, as well as insight into the discussion points at this year’s Tall Buildings Conference.
In between, there were group debates, presentations and interactive sessions on a variety of topics, several of which are covered in the eBook here that follows.
Despite all the challenges of the last few years, it was clear to see that the passion for collaborating, networking and meeting remain key features of the fire industry. A sector which is committed to improving building safety standards not just in the UK, but on a global perspective.
So don’t forget to put the date in your diary for FIREX 2023, which will return on the 16-18 May at London’s ExCeL once more!
