SHIC announces Dr. Paul Sundberg retirement
Dr. Paul Sundberg, executive director of the Swine Health Information Center (SHIC), has announced he will retire at the end of 2023. Upon accepting Dr. Sundberg’s retirement request, the SHIC Board of Directors moved to promote Associate Director Dr. Megan Niederwerder to executive director, effective January 1, 2024.
“Having Megan on board since April 2022 has allowed for interaction between her, Paul, and the Board so we can mesh her talents and strengths with the ongoing success we have had under Paul’s leadership,” remarked SHIC Board Chair Dr. Russ Nugent.

Sabrina Burkiewicz joins Growmark team
Sabrina Burkiewicz has been named as the new external communications manager for Growmark effective immediately. Burkiewicz comes to Growmark from the news and communications division at Illinois Farm Bureau. A graduate from Illinois State University, Burkiewicz is originally from Central Illinois where her family farmed grain and livestock.
Growmark is an agricultural cooperative serving almost 400,000 customers across North America, providing agronomy, energy, facility engineering and construction, and logistics products and services, as well as grain marketing and risk management services. Read more
Wilbur-Ellis CEO John Buckley leads crop agriculture business
Wilbur-Ellis announced Aug. 14 that President and Chief Executive Officer John Buckley is assuming direct oversight of the company's crop agriculture business, while continuing as Wilbur-Ellis president and CEO.
This move comes as current Agribusiness President Mark Ripato prepares to retire at the end of 2023, and the company intensifies its focus on agriculture and food markets in North America, following the merger of Connell – its Asia-Pacific specialty chemicals and ingredients business – with Caldic earlier this year.Read more
Alltech welcomes two additions to its U.S. poultry team
Alltech is pleased to announce two additions to its U.S. poultry team. Keith Fleetwood has joined the company as a poultry account manager and feed mill specialist. In that role, he will provide support related to specialty ingredient, nutrition and premix sales for the company’s commercial poultry customers. Additionally, Matie George has returned to Ridley Feed Ingredients, which is part of the Alltech family of companies, as a formulation and pricing specialist. George will provide support in the area of complete feed formulations for Ridley’s poultry customers.Read more

U.S. Poultry & Egg Association (USPOULTRY) announces the promotion of Matt Spencer to vice president, HR & safety programs, and Kris Early to director, communications.Spencer joined USPOULTRY in 2017 as director, HR & safety programs, where he was responsible for the strategic management of certain USPOULTRY technical services provided to, or on behalf of, Association members, including worker safety, human resources and employment law programs. Early was marketing manager for Marel. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from East Carolina University in North Carolina.Read more
Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative launches climate-smart project with new positions
Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative, one of the largest dairy co-ops in the country, has announced a pair of changes to its sustainability team. Carrie Carroll has joined the cooperative as director of climate-smart, and Jamie Fisher has been promoted to senior project manager for the cooperative’s climate-smart project.
The moves mark the start of the cooperative’s $50 million grant project through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities program. Edge is spearheading a multi-partner project aimed at expanding climate-smart markets across multiple states and establishing dairy and beet sugar as climate-smart commodities. Carroll will lead the project.
“I am thrilled for this next chapter,” said Carroll. “This project will help us work directly with farmers to reduce carbon impacts, improve water quality and build a more environmentally and financially sustainable food chain.”
Carroll most recently served as sustainability strategy leader for the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and has been with the institute in various roles since 2014. She brings extensive knowledge in national grant administration and management of partnerships and teams. She is a proud alumnus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Washington where she received her master’s in public policy.
